About the area
The province of Catalunya lies in sunny North East Spain. With the mighty Pyrenees to the North, the Mediterranean to the East and the Ebro delta to the South, Catalunya boasts Spain’s second largest city, Barcelona, as its capital. Catalunya is Spain’s richest province and the native tongue, Catalan, is the principal spoken language. The Costa Brava is Catalunya’s northern most region and undoubtedly the most beautiful, towering cliffs, beautiful beaches, medieval villages combine lush green countryside and the historic Catalan culture to make this a truly unique and magical location!
The region is seeped in culture with a rich agricultural and historic heritage. It is said that 30% of the best restaurants in Spain can be found here. Most catalan restaurants offer “menu del dia” – an ideal way to taste real catalan cooking for a very low cost. Three or four courses with water and wine are usually offered ranging from 10 – 20 euros.
Must visits in the region are Agua Blava – a beautiful beach cove, Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc – typical catalan seaside villages, Figueres & the Salvador Dali museum, Banyoles lake & the volcanic region of Olot. Walking enthusiasts will find numerous opportunities to explore the beautiful coastal footpaths and there are excellent hill walks in the region.
Girona is the largest city in the province and has much to offer from shopping on the banks of the river with its colourful old apartment buildings flanking either side to sightseeing – the cathedral being first stop. Girona is linked via train and road to Barcelona and has a now very busy international airport.
There’s still nowhere to beat Spain for sun, sea and holiday fun. We believe the Costa Brava to be the best part of Spain, with its rugged coastline, glorious sandy beaches that go on for miles and almost perfect holiday weather. The coastline of the Costa Brava is truly spectacular with typical white washed fishing villages nestling in the bays and secluded coves of this diverse region.
Holidaymakers return time after time to this glorious region. Our quality accommodation is centrally located on the Costa Brava and is ideally placed to explore away from the coast. Just a few miles inland it’s a step back in time to picture-postcard mountain monasteries and picturesque cobbled villages such as Pals, Begur and San Pere Pescador. Originally a traditional fishing village, L’Estartit has grown in popularity with holiday makers over the years. As a resort, it offers a wide range of facilities and is well suited to couples of all ages as well as families. The seafront promenade leads to the old town and working harbour which is home to numerous leisure crafts, working fishing boats & pleasure boats which take out divers and tourists to the Medes Isles. Traditional tapas bars and cosmopolitan cafes make this the real heart of L’Estartit.
The Medes Isles are a group of small, protected isles situated a mile from the coast of L’Estartit. Famous in the world of diving, divers come from all over the world to dive here. The Medes Isles are home to thousands of species of fish and various species of birds. Regular glass bottom boat excursions go out to the Islands and there are many diving schools to choose from should you fancy a go at scuba diving or snorkelling!
L’Estartit’s magnificent golden sandy beach stretches 5 kms along the coast to Platja de Pals and is separated in the middle by the River Ter. The beach shelves gently into the sea making it an ideal choice for families and the size of the beach means even in high season it does not become over crowded!!
The resort itself has a wide range of shops, bars, restaurants and entertainments to suit all ages and tastes. For a more traditional Catalan feel, the church square down to the harbour offers a variety of bars & restaurants offering local cuisine and tapas. With many festivals held throughout the year in Catalunya you will find the local dance of the “Sardanes” a regular feature in the church square. firework displays, parades, live music and much more are also regular features throughout the summer calendar. For more details of local festivals please speak to our local staff.

When you are here in L’Estartit, you are only 1hr 30 min from Barcelona, so a visit here is a must. There are various ways to see this great city – by car (not for the faint hearted), by train – a cheap and easy way to travel, by public bus or by excursion. There are various different excursions to the city daytime and evening. Most of the excisions visit the Sagrada Familia, the Olimpic stadium with a stop to take in the impressive panoramic views of the city, the football stadium ‘Nou Camp’, Placa de catalunya and the world famous “Las Ramblas”. Our recommendation in high season is the magic fountains at the royal palace – an truly unforgettable sight.
For more information regarding excursions please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.
The largest city in the province of the same name. Girona is a great cosmopolitan city with a combination great sights and shopping. The cathedral which is set on the river bank leads down to the “Ramblas” and the Arabic quarter. View this area by “carrilet” or tourist train which takes you through the old streets. The twice weekly market here is good for grabbing a bargin and for a great selection of locally produced fruit and veg. With indoor shopping malls, Girona has something for everyone.
Just a 30 minute drive from Estartit you will reach Figueres, home of the famous Salvador Dali museum. This museum is well worth a visit to see the wonderful yet “strange” art created by this eccentric artist!
The Costa Brava, and particularly Estartit, is tailor made for people of all standards of scuba diving. The Medas Isles situated just 1 mile from the coast of Estartit is a very popular diving destination all year round. The Isles are a protected area and only registered boats and diving companies are permitted to dive here in order to protect the thousands of species of marine and bird life found here. The coast line also provides fantastic diving opportunities with many caves and even a sunken ship to discover. There is something available for all standards of divers from beginners try dives to Padi courses. Just ask at our office for more advice about which courses are more suitable for you and your family.
If you don’t fancy diving then why not have a go at snorkelling. There are daily snorkel boats which take you our to the isles in the summer months. Here you can have a go at snorkelling or you can just swim in these crystal clear waters.
From the harbour here in Estartit you can take one of the many pleasure boat excursions, including glass bottom, sailing boats, speed boats and boat hire.
Windsurfing is also a popular water sport as is kayaking. Please contact us for more detailed information.
Water Parks are a great day out for the family. We have 2 parks within a 45 minutes drive from L’Estartit.
Aqua Diver is a great park which has had new rides installed in 2007, plus you can go and visit the town, Playa D’Aro, where you will find some of the best shops in the area, though be warned a lot of these are designer shops so credit cards are essential!!
Aqua Brava is the bigger of the 2, with slides, pools and climbing pool rocks there is plenty for the whole family to do here. There is also a free bus service, once you have bought tickets from our office we then issue these, to this park every day from L’Estartit from June until September.
With many tracks and hidden path ways, to be led by a guide on your horse you will have a great couple of hours seeing places and sights that the normal tourist would not normally see!
At the office we can phone and book a time for you, though we normally advise to go in the afternoon when the sun is setting as is the coolest time of the day to be horse riding in the countryside!
Unlike a lot of coast resorts, Estartit is blessed with fabulous walking routes ranging from gentle coast walks to tough routes into the country side and into the mountain side. However, the resort itself is very flat and boasts a fantastic promenade and harbour.
Cycling is one of the biggest sports in Spain, and a typical sight on a Sunday is a group of cyclists, members of the many cycle clubs in Catalunya, taking up most of the road! Travelling by bicycle is a great way to see the area, the local area being mainly flat. The surrounding areas of Estartit are home to sites of archaeological importance such as the famous ruins of Empuries and the ancient Iberian settlement of Ullastret. Other important towns such as La Bisbal d’Emporda with its castle and ceramic tradition and Peretelada are great routes from Estartit. We have available detailed cycle routes from our office.
If you would like to see the area in a different way try quad biking or if you like four wheels try out a ‘Buggy’. Travel with a guide around some of the unknown tracks of Catalunya, visiting small villages on the way and taking in some breathtaking views from up in the hillside!
With in a 15 minute drive from all our accommodation in L’Estartit there are 3 fantastic Golf courses. The Empordà Golf course offers a total of 36 holes, divided into two separate 18-hole courses: Links and Forest. The course was designed by Robert von Hagge, who chose to integrate a links-style course with two large lakes, dunes and rolling bunkers into a classic Mediterranean landscape replete with dense, manicured pine stands and spacious fairways. To this end, he was able to take full advantage of the natural beauty of the setting itself: stunning El Baix Empordà in the heart of the Costa Brava region.
We also have the Golf course Serres De Pals which is only a 15/20 minute drive from L’Estartit. The course, designed by Ramón Espinosa, has three different areas with smooth hills, pine woods and lanes among lakes. Surrounded by marvelous landscapes from the Baix Empordà, this 18 holes course, par 72 and 6.263 metres of length, joints the best conditions to play golf and to enjoy the mild Mediterranean weather.
Thirdly we have the course Platja de Pals. Located on the farmland of Arenals de Mar, on dunes covered by an immense pine forest planted seventy years ago.
There is also a great Pitch and putt course at Gualta, only 10 minutes from L’Estartit, for those who do not wish to pay the prices of the main Golf courses. This is a great morning or afternoon out, the course is a par 3 and they also hire clubs and trolleys.
Please find below a full list of the courses which you will find here on the
Costa Brava. For more information on any of the courses please do not
hesiate to contact us.
